Active Transportation Assessment Grant Offered

The SD Department of Health is pleased to offer a technical assistance opportunity for South Dakota communities on conducting active transportation assessments that can jump-start improvements to the built environment, enhancing walkability and bikeability. Active transportation integrates physical activity into daily routines such as walking or biking to destinations such as work, grocery stores or parks. Creating activity-friendly routes to everyday destinations is an evidenced-based strategy to increase physical activity in communities. Recreation Trails Program Applications Open

Applications are now being accepted for grants from the Recreation Trails Program (RTP). The grants will be available for trail projects sponsored by municipalities, counties, state parks, federal land management agencies or tribal governments. The program provides partial reimbursement for approved trail projects. Eligible projects include construction of new public trails, rehabilitation of existing public trails, development of trail-related facilities and educational programs that relate to recreational trails. The application deadline is April 9.

AmeriCorps Information Session

Learn more about AmeriCorps NCCC, a federally funded national service program that partners with nonprofits, such as government entities, to meet community needs through service. Teams assist with facilities maintenance and property repairs, building renovations, trail maintenance, grounds improvement, youth facilitation, and other related needs.

Alternate Plans Announced for Several Conferences

The SDPRA Maintenance School traditionally held in the summer has been postponed. The chair is exploring options and the feasibility of holding a session later this fall. 

The 2020 NRPA Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, will be held via virtual conference on Oct. 27-29 to provide education sessions, product spotlights and networking opportunities, making the conference as inclusive as possible. Learn more

The 2020 Midwest Conference in Fort Collins, Colorado, has been canceled. Refunds are being issued to all registrants. Organizers remind registrants to cancel any hotel or travel plans they have made. The 2021 conference will be held in Kearney, Nebraska. Learn more
