It recognizes public and private agencies, not individuals, who have projects or programs completed in the current year that best exemplify sound principles and philosophy of parks and recreation.

A major purpose of the recognition program is to contribute in a tangible way to the important goal of increasing a positive public awareness throughout South Dakota of the significance of soundly conceived and implemented recreation programs and facility development.

Citations may be awarded in a variety of categories including but not necessarily limited to:

  1. Park design and development
  2. Recreation programming
  3. Community celebrations/special events
  4. Public/private sponsorships
  5. Grounds or facility maintenance
  6. Urban forestry/planting or landscaping projects
